Israel week begins next week. We will be celebrating Israel all week in honor of its 65th birthday. Each day, we will take a look into different parts of Israeli life.

This week, Long Beach Hillel students will be going on a Taglit-Birthright Israel trip along with students from the Hillels at University of Delaware and University of Wisconsin. We are so excited for our students to be heading off on this special trip, as students from previous trips have all tremendously enjoyed them.

Prior to going on the trip, students attended three orientation sessions, over the last few weeks to help them prepare for the trip. Rabbi Drew and Rachel Kaplan guided them, seeking to educate the students about Israel’s history, to help build up their anticipation for the storied Jewish homeland. “It made me realize how much I didn’t know,” said Candice Lebowitz. “I felt undereducated about Israel and it gave us a sense of what’s to come.”

The last session, which took place last week, was geared more toward practical information for the trip. Of course, having the orientation sessions gave the students an opportunity to start building relationships and familiarity with each other. “It was great because I got to meet some of the people I’m going with before the trip,” said Talia Banarie.

We wish our students a tremendously meaningful and enjoyable trip to our homeland!

Protesting Neturei Karta at CSULB

Yesterday, Rabbi Drew created and had made up posters protesting Neturei Karta spokesman Rabbi Yisroel Dovid Weiss, who spoke at CSULB. Speaking on “Zionism vs. Judaism: The Cause of Mid-East Unrest”, Rabbi Weiss’ talk was held by the MSA. Rabbi Drew was joined by students in sending a message that Neturei Karta’s views on Israel and Zionism are not representative of world Jewry.

Vice Prime Minister Ya’alon Speaks in Long Beach

On Monday afternoon, Vice Prime Minister Moshe “Bogie” Ya’alon spoke at the Alpert Jewish Community Center as part of an event with the Jewish Federation of Greater Long Beach and Western Orange County.
Ya’alon’s talk was a general “Israeli briefing” for the community that lasted exactly one hour. He started off by speaking about a couple of misconceptions regarding Israel, such as the Israel/Palestine conflict is the cause for further conflict in the area. Also, that land for peace has been a failed concept: After Oslo, there was land for terrorism; after the Gaza withdrawal, there was land for rockets. He said that “Our experience is that territorial concessions were cause for further violence from the Arabs.”
Really, the conflict in the Middle East is Jihadists versus Westernism. It’s not really about territory – it is about radical Islam and this is the core for the current problems for stability in the Middle East.

He said also that the internal challenge amongst Westerners is how to include Israel. But they want to create peace there, so they come up with different ideas:
- Solution Israel – we believe as westerners there is a solution for every problem
- No Israel – every thing is instant
- Instant peace, peace now - can be deluded, we are in a hurry
- Another is mea culpa, self-guilt

He said, with regards to the Iran issue, there are four strategies for dealing with it:
1) political isolation of Iran
2) Crippling economic sanctions
3) At least moral support to those who are dissidents within Iran because of human rights
4) “Very missing is a credible military option.” He is one of those who wants to avoid this, but needs to be viable to stop Iran from going nuclear. He knows war and wants to avoid it.

With regard to the Israel-Palestine issue, we need to solve it not top-down (like with Oslo), but rather bottom-up. He further described this in the video clip below.

In closing, he said that Israel is under a delegitimization campaign -try a counter campaign, especially through the Internet, which anybody can do.

Israel advocacy organization StandWithUs is currently accepting submissions for its “Broadcast Israel” video contest.

Many people around the world know that Israel has a lot more to offer than just what you see on the news.

“Broadcast Israel” is a one-of-a-kind contest whose main purpose is to educate people about the beauty of Israel.

We want you to send short, positive movies about different aspects of Israel, that will include anything from what your Kibbutz experience was like, to Israel’s scientific accomplishments.

That way you will both learn and share new and different information about Israel, the kind of stuff you NEVER see on the news.

LET YOUR IMAGINATION RUN WILD, AND WIN A FREE VACATION IN ISRAEL!!!

The clips must be submitted no later than August 1st, 2009. We will announce the winners on August 5th.

CRITERIA:

Additionally I am posting pictures from the Occupation 101 event the MSA produced in honor of Yom Ha’Atzamut. If you think it looks a lot like last year’s wall you are right…I think it is the exact same mis-imformation and false claims. The reprise of the theater/skit portraying brutal Jewish soldiers will be available on YouTube soon, and I will post the links here. Beach Hillel is very sad to have these kinds of pictures to show folks, but if I don’t show you them who will?
